<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Scottish Wildlife</h2>

<p>Islay is home to some truly magnificent natural beauty and Scottish wildlife. The island is a hot spot for wildlife and birdwatchers throughout the world and renowned for its offering of diverse and rare wild inhabitants. Planning a trip to Islay? Keep reading to find out more about wildlife spotting on Islay.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Grey Seals</h2>

<p>Islay is the perfect place to observe grey seals in their natural habitat. With a colony native to the island, the seals have become fairly accustomed to a human presence and as such are happy to come within close proximity. Be warned – grey seals have a nasty bite and will not stop at anything to protect their young. It’s always important to remember never to approach a seal pup, even if it’s on its own as if your scent transfers to them. When the mother seal returns, she is likely to reject her pup. If you’re worried that a seal pup has been abandoned, stay downwind, to prevent your scent scaring away the mother and keep an eye on the baby. If you’re confident no mother is returning, then call the <a href="http://www.scottishspca.org/rehoming/centres/11_national-wildlife-rescue-centre" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Scottish SPCA</a> on 0300 0999 999.</p>

<p>The best places to spot grey seals on the island are Port Wemyss and Portnahaven. You may also see them around the bays between Lagavulin and Artalla. Seals can also be found at <a href="http://www.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/seenature/reserves/guide/l/lochgruinart/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Loch Gruinart</a> Nature Reserve. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1000" height="714" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/grey-seal.jpg" alt="Grey seal swimming in the sea in Scotland" class="wp-image-1230" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/grey-seal.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/grey-seal-300x214.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/grey-seal-768x548.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Keep an eye out for seals in the water around Islay. </figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Whales</h2>

<p>When you&#8217;re on the Isle of Islay, part of the excitement of exploring Scottish wildlife is the chance to spot whales swimming in the nearby waters. From <a href="https://whaletrail.org/the-oa-islay" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Oa Nature Reserve</a>, you can catch a glimpse of humpback whales, killer whales and minke whales. These massive creatures travel huge distances, swimming north or south, or crossing the wide Atlantic and often pass by our Scottish shores during their migrations.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Humpback-Whales.jpg" alt="Humpback whales breaching along the coast of Scotland" class="wp-image-9573" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Humpback-Whales.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Humpback-Whales-300x200.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Humpback-Whales-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The Oa is right at the end of the Hebrides, facing Northern Ireland and the Atlantic Ocean.</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Dolphins</h2>

<p>If you&#8217;re lucky while checking out the Scottish wildlife around Islay, you might spot some dolphins playing in the waves. These amazing creatures are a joy to watch as they leap and swim. Keep your eyes peeled when you&#8217;re near the coast and you might just catch a glimpse of them having a blast in their natural habitat. Seeing dolphins off Islay&#8217;s shores is a special moment that you won&#8217;t forget!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="655" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Wild-Bottlenose-Dolphins.jpg" alt="Wild Bottlenose Dolphins Jumping Out Of The Sea" class="wp-image-9570" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Wild-Bottlenose-Dolphins.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Wild-Bottlenose-Dolphins-300x197.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Wild-Bottlenose-Dolphins-768x503.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Dolphins are frequently seen around Port Ellen, also in Kilnaughton Bay.</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Porpoises</h2>

<p>Port Askaig, on Islay&#8217;s coast, gives a great view of the Sound of Islay This is a narrow strip of water between the neighbouring islands. The tides here are strong, making it a busy spot where Scottish wildlife thrives. Among the creatures you might spot are Harbour Porpoises. These small but clever animals are expert hunters, hardly ever missing their prey. They&#8217;re less than 2 meters long, so they can be tricky to spot, but watch for their curved backs and triangle-shaped fins as they swim through the Sound of Islay.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="678" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Porpoise.jpg" alt="Common or Harbour Porpoise looking out of the sea" class="wp-image-9576" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Porpoise.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Porpoise-300x203.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Porpoise-768x521.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">You&#8217;ll find Porpoises swimming through the Sound of Islay water.</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Back on land&#8230;</h2>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bird Watching</h2>

<p>On the Scottish island of Islay, there are around 100 different types of birds that inhabit here from Golden Eagles soaring overhead to Puffins nesting along the coastline. <a href="https://islaycottages.com/blog/birdwatching-in-islay/">Bird watching</a> is the perfect pastime when visiting Islay. <a href="https://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves-and-events/reserves-a-z/loch-gruinart/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Loch Gruinart Reserve</a> is a great place to take your binoculars and see a wide range of wild birds on the moorlands. Whether you&#8217;re a pro at spotting birds or just starting out, Islay&#8217;s beaches, moors and lakes are perfect for exploring Scottish wildlife. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="533" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Islay-Birdwatching-1024x533.jpg" alt="A White Tailed Sea Eagle swooping over the sea with a fish in its claws" class="wp-image-915" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Islay-Birdwatching-1024x533.jpg 1024w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Islay-Birdwatching-300x156.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Islay-Birdwatching-768x400.jpg 768w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Islay-Birdwatching.jpg 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Golden Eagles soar above the Oa year-round, making it a prime spot for visitors to catch sight of these birds of prey.</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">European Otters</h2>

<p>If you’re seeking ot-ta wildlife, then Islay has a treat in store for you! A bad pun aside, Islay is a prime place to spot a European otter or two! The otters on the island are notoriously tricky to spot. If you wait a while, you are likely to be rewarded for your patience. You might spot them on the north of Bunnahabain, or on the Caol Ila beach.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Otters.jpg" alt="Brown otter sitting on a rock" class="wp-image-9594" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Otters.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Otters-300x200.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Otters-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Otters live near streams in almost any location on the island.</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Deer</h2>

<p>Of course, no trip to the Scottish Highlands and Islands would be complete without spotting a stag! You may spot these majestic creatures throughout the island, but they can be very shy! The island is home to three species of deer – Fallow, Roe and Red deer. These species can be found all over the island and are a great challenge for those looking to add to their photography bucket list.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/roe-deer.jpg" alt="Roe Deer on a sunny day Islay Scotland" class="wp-image-1232" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/roe-deer.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/roe-deer-300x200.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/roe-deer-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Roe Deer on a sunny day in Islay.</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Brown Hare</h2>

<p>The beautiful species of brown hare are all over the island. Easily spooked like the deer on Islay, the best time to sneak a peek at a brown hare is during dusk in the vicinity of <a href="https://www.islayinfo.com/lochgorm.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Loch</a><a href="https://www.islayinfo.com/about-islay/key-places/loch-gorm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Gorm</a>. Take things slow on the road as these adorable mammals may jump out onto the road! If you’re lucky, you may even be privileged to watch the hares play together in groups.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/shutterstock_1013607901.jpg" alt="A brown hare running" class="wp-image-1480" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/shutterstock_1013607901.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/shutterstock_1013607901-300x200.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/shutterstock_1013607901-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Watch out for hares across the island. </figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Stoats</h2>

<p>Stoats are pretty common on Islay and they are interesting creatures. Some people think Islay stoats are a bit different from others and a species of their own, but not everyone agrees. Even though we don&#8217;t get much snow here, stoats on the Isle of Islay turn white in the winter. Keep an eye out for stoats when you&#8217;re exploring Islay&#8217;s countryside!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Stoat.jpg" alt="A Stoat, Mustela erminea standing up on it's back legs between the grass.
" class="wp-image-9581" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Stoat.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Stoat-300x200.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Stoat-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Stoats are very secretive and hard to spot. </figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Frogs and Toads</h2>

<p>Frogs and toads are pretty common on Islay. You can find the Common Toad and the Common Frog all over the place. You might hear their croaking sounds during the breeding season. These amphibians are a sign that Islay&#8217;s ecosystem is healthy. So, when you&#8217;re out exploring the island, keep an eye out for these little guys hopping around in ponds and marshes.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="654" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Common-Toad.jpg" alt="european common toad (bufo bufo) looking out of in shallow water." class="wp-image-9586" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Common-Toad.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Common-Toad-300x196.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Common-Toad-768x502.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Spot toads and frogs in the marshes around Islay.</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Beautiful Islay villages and towns</h2>

<p>Are you planning a trip to Islay? If so, then make sure you don’t miss out on some of the beautiful Islay villages and towns here on the Island. There are little hamlets, villages and towns dotted all over Islay, and they are all within easy reach of each other by car. We’ve put together some of our favourite places to visit &#8211; and what to do when you get there!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Port Charlotte</h2>

<p>This is regarded by many as &#8220;the most beautiful village&#8221; on the island. It was founded by the Member of Parliament and Laird of Islay, Walter Frederick Campbell in 1828. This charming little place was named after Campbell&#8217;s mother, Lady Charlotte Campbell Bury.&nbsp;A slightly larger village on the island, it was built to house the workers of the Lochindaal Distillery, which opened in 1829. You may have heard this distillery referred to as the Port Charlotte Distillery, or Rhinns Distillery. And sadly, this was one distillery not to last&#8230; it closed in 1929, just over 100 years from its opening. But its buildings still remain and some are now in use by a Youth Hostel and the Islay Natural History Trust. </p>

<p>Port Charlotte is where you will find the <a href="https://www.islaymuseum.org/">Museum of Islay Life</a>, documenting life on the island over the past 12,000 years. Exhibits include reconstructions from archaeological excavations of prehistoric sites on the island. It’s a fascinating look at how people used to live here on Islay.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bruichladdich </h2>

<p>Just north of Port Charlotte is the village of Bruichladdich, with a distillery at its heart. Built in 1881, by brothers Robert William and John Gourlay Harvey, Bruichladdich was specifically designed to produce the purest unpeated spirit possible. But the distillery has been opened and closed variously throughout the years. In more recent years it has been taken over by the drinks giant Remy Cointreau, and today it is a successful business.&nbsp; It is a place you can visit on your trip to taste and buy some delicious drinks. Tours are available when possible, but it is wise to <a href="https://www.bruichladdich.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">get in touch</a> beforehand to check they are running.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And of course, <a href="https://www.bruichladdich.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bruichladdich Distillery</a> bought the rest of the old Lochindaal Distillery buildings and have created a new whisky distillery and gin distillery. As such they have become a very popular whisky brand from Isaly&#8230; and gin! The Botanist is now one of Scotland&#8217;s most popular gins. Here you can enjoy super tours, cocktail making and tasting sessions, and a wonderful shop.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex">
<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" data-id="7998" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Bruichladdich.jpg" alt="Bruichladdich distillery." class="wp-image-7998" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Bruichladdich.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Bruichladdich-300x200.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Bruichladdich-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><br>Bruichladdich Distillery</figcaption></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" data-id="7999" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Port-Charlotte.jpg" alt="Port Charlotte" class="wp-image-7999" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Port-Charlotte.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Port-Charlotte-300x200.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Port-Charlotte-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Port Charlotte</figcaption></figure>
</figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Portnahaven Village</h2>

<p>These are two separate villages close together that share many things &#8211; including a church! Each village has its own entrance (you can choose which side to enter from yourself!).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Portnahaven has a small sheltered harbour which is often home to grey seals basking in the island sun. Along the seaside, you’ll enjoy whitewashed houses looking out over the water.&nbsp; It was built during the 19th century, as a fishing and crofting villager and offers a slice of history for explorers. So, step back in time and walk amongst the quaint buildings whilst listening to the waves lapping on the rocks. Or, take to the water&#8217;s edge, and stunning enjoy views of the opposite bay of Orsay Island. And here you will also find the famous Rhinns of Islay lighthouse, which was built in 1825. Still today the lantern can be seen some 40 kilometres away at sea. This is a great spot for a walk and a picnic on the rocks, whilst spotting for seals. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Port Wemyss</h2>

<p>And whilst you are down this way, pop along next door to the lovely Port Wemys, built in 1832. Again, this village was built to encourage fishing and take people away from farming the lands. And as a fishing village, the catch would be cured and traded in Ireland. As such, the village has strong ties with the Irish and enjoys a Celtic shop.</p>

<p>As well as plenty of history, in Port Wemyss you will find a coastal path that is great to stroll along; it’s not a long path, but over its course, you might be lucky enough to spot dolphins out at sea.&nbsp; With these villages being so close, in past times, they shared one church, but with separate doors for the people of each village to enter. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Kilchoman</h2>

<p>Home of Islay Cottages, Kilchoman is an area of Islay that is one of the most ancient on the islands. Although the current church was built in 1827, an older medieval church existed on the site before then. Nearby is our wonderful Machir Bay which has both a rocky area and sandy beach. It&#8217;s also the site of many shipwrecks!<br><br>Nearby, <a href="https://www.kilchomandistillery.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kilchoman Distillery</a> produces its delicious single malt whisky. It&#8217;s a great trip out, especially if you are staying with us at <a href="https://islaycottages.com/accommodation/kilchoman-house/">Kilchoman House</a>. Set in 37 acres and over 200 years old, it&#8217;s a great place to kick back with a dram and enjoy the serenity island life can offer. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="667" src="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Kilchoman-church.jpg" alt="Kilchoman Church" class="wp-image-8039" srcset="https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Kilchoman-church.jpg 1000w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Kilchoman-church-300x200.jpg 300w, https://islaycottages.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Kilchoman-church-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Kilchoman Church</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ardnave</h2>

<p>Ardnave Point is a wonderful area to visit if you enjoy history. It is here in the sandy grasslands of the <a href="https://www.socantscot.org/product/kilellan-farm-ardnave-islay/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ardnave peninsula that evidence of intermittent human activity</a> spanning some seven thousand years from Mesolithic times to the Early Historic period has been found. Some of the objects found here, including a hearth, are on display in Islay Museum.</p>

<p>There is some wonderful walking along this part of Islay&#8217;s coast, with plenty of wildlife to be spotted. Keep your eye out for mysterious-looking pools, which were once used to keep lobsters fresh for sale!</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bowmore&nbsp;</h2>

<p>The capital of Islay is Bowmore, and it is very likely that you will visit this town at some point during your stay. There are around 1,000 people who stay here, and so the town has all the facilities and amenities that you could need.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One particularly pleasant thing to do here is to visit the Bowmore Round Church. They say it is round so there are no corners for the devil to hide in! It’s beautifully decorated and is certainly worth a visit.&nbsp; And here you will also find Bowmore distillery and a lovely harbour to explore. Bowmore is one of the main villages on the island of Islay, and as such, here you will find shops, a petrol station, eco-car chargers, and amenities.</p>

<p>And don’t forget to also pay a visit to <a href="https://peatzeria.com/">Peatzeria</a>, our very own restaurant and home to delicious Italian food! Peatzeria is one of the most popular restaurants on Islay, and as such is rated the best Islay restaurant on TripAdvisor.</p>

<p>Wherever you visit on Islay, from small hamlets to larger towns, you are sure to enjoy the peace and tranquillity our beautiful island can offer. Islay villages offer the chance to get away from it all and dream of what life could be like living on an island like Islay.&nbsp;<a href="https://islaycottages.com/accommodation/">Book a stay with us today</a>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Exploring Scottish Nature on Islay</h2>

<p>Islay is famous for its spectacular wildlife and is home to many species. A beautiful, peaceful and easily-accessible island&nbsp;of the Inner Hebrides, it&#8217;s the perfect place to visit for a Scottish nature and wildlife retreat.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Sea Life</h2>

<p>Islay Sea Adventures offer wonderful <a href="http://islay-sea-adventures.co.uk/wildlife-tour/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">nature-watching boat tours</a>. So, if you fancy bobbing up and down on the waves and breathing in the salty sea air you can board a boat at Port Ellen Marina, which will take you along the East Coast and introduce you to some of Scotland&#8217;s most amazing creatures. From the cute puppy-eyed seals, huge basking sharks and friendly dolphins you are sure to be dazzled!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="See Islay like you&#039;ve never seen it before!" width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/FHq9iaqji8Y?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Dry Land</h2>

<p>Of course you do not have to board a boat to observe much of Islay’s wildlife. You can see much of what is on offer on foot on dry land. Seals can be observed along coastal routes. Or, if you venture inland you can stumble upon an otter near a river, or deer trotting across moorland. You may if you are lucky even spot the occasional hare darting across the heather. And if you&#8217;d like some expert guidance, Wild Islay Birding offer a choice of <a href="https://www.islaycottages.com/things-to-see-and-do/wildlife-tour-on-islay/">wildlife and bird-watching tours</a> by mini-bus on the island.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Feathered Friends</h2>

<p>You can spot many species of birds from any part of the island you visit. Geese and a variety of ducks bob and splash in the waters of Islay, while raptors such as the Golden Eagle and buzzards glide the skies, hunting out their next feed!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
