History of Islay . . .

The island has a rich and fascinating history. Celts were the first major settlers but, Islay has been inhabited since at least 8000BC. The island is a treasure trove of historical artifacts, from standing stones and Celtic crosses to graves and ruins to explore. The island’s history is there for all to see in The Museum of Life in Port Charlotte. The museum is open Monday to Friday, and is the perfect place to learn how Islay became the island it is today.

Things to do . . .

When you visit us, you won’t be short of things to do. Islay is on the whisky coast of Scotland and has 9 working distilleries. Why not take a tour? Or you could experience the wonderful Scottish wildlife the island has to offer. With over 200 species of birds visiting and living on the island, it is a Twitcher’s paradise!

Although Isay is a small island (just 25 miles long and 15 miles wide), the people living there know how to have a good time. Throughout the year there are lots of events to attend. Festivals, walks, races, beach rugby tournaments, music festivals, and more.

But, if you want some tranquility, Islay can provide that in bucket loads. There are many walking paths to follow through the stunning landscape, and Islay has some 22 beaches to explore.
