Islay holidays are certainly something that will never leave you. It is such a stunning island that no matter what the weather or time of year you visit you leave with it in your blood! It is such a captivating place and there is no better way to explore this infectious island than on foot.
Islay and Jura have some spectacular offerings and with so much scenic countryside there is ample choice of terrains and pathways making walking accessible to all abilities. You can meander beaches with the children or clamber the steep slopes such as the Paps of Jura. There is much information available on walking routes online with information to guide you on ability level and time, making it easy for you to plan your day’s adventures!

If you are staying with us here at Kilchoman in our fabulous Islay accommodation then there is a good selection of trails close by – just head down to the 2 km sweep of golden sand at Machir Bay and stroll one of Islay’s most spectacular beaches. This walk is straightforward, making it accessible for all to explore the wonders of the beautiful bay. If you fancy something a little more challenging then you can embark upon a more advanced walk which loops round Turnaichaidh, Machir Bay and Kilchoman. It takes around 2.5 to 3hrs to complete and presents to you some beautiful scenery as well as a spectacular Celtic Cross from the 14/15th centuries.
Walking activities on offer
The Islay Walk Week takes place each year in April and allows you to take part in a walking tour with an informative local guide who will showcase some unusual bits of Islay.
The RSPB at Gruinart organises guided Nature Walks each week throughout the summer where you can spot some of their residents in their habitats. Here you can learn about the success stories from this working farm. It makes for a great day out with the children with plenty to see and do. It lasts around 2 hours.
