If you were in a rush getting to Islay, you could easily hop on a p[lane from Glasgow and be here in no time at all. You could leave in the morning and be eating pizza on the beach for lunch! But…who wants to rush? Especially when there are so many beautiful sights to see and memorable adventures to undertake on the road to Islay. So here’s an idea for a road trip from Edinburgh to Islay, and some of the amazing things to visit along the way. Driving holidays make the journey part of the experience – let’s enjoy Scotland from the road.

Start in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is such a glorious city, it’s the perfect start to any holiday. Enjoy the culture and stay in a beautiful location like Parliament House Hotel, just down from the city centre. A road trip from Edinburgh to Islay is perfectly enjoyable, but how about upgrading? Take your road journey to the next level with a Land Rover 4 x 4 from Nomadic Scotland to make this truly an experience to remember. This way, the travelling becomes part of the holiday, not just the bits in between.

The next decision is whether to pass through Glasgow, or go via Stirling. Timewise it’s about the same to get to Loch Lomond, so the choice is yours!

The high road

Heading north on the M9 / M80 takes you towards the beautiful ancient city of Stirling, but not before you pass a couple of giant horse heads by the side of the road. No, really. These statues are called the Kelpies and are a good place to explore for a while. The nearby Falkirk Wheel, the only rotating boat lift in the world, is nearby and offers canal boat trips.

The drive into Stirling is beautiful from any direction – keep an eye out for both Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument. Stirling used to be the capital city of Stirling, and has plenty of history to discover as a result.

The road from here to Loch Lomond takes you through glorious Stirling countryside and charming towns and villages like Kippen and Balfron. There’s loads of opportunity to find somewhere and enjoy the scenic centre of Scotland.

The low road

From Edinburgh, take the M8 towards Glasgow. This direct route will take you through the centre of Scotland’s largest city, with plenty of opportunities to stop off and enjoy everything it has to offer. A cultural highlight is Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Not only is Glasgow a haven for shoppers, it’s perfect for sports lovers too. Scotland’s two biggest football teams – and biggest rivals – Celtic FC and Rangers FC have stadiums in Glasgow.

You could spend weeks and still not see everything, but when you’re ready, head out of the city on the A82 towards the southernmost tip of Loch Lomond.

Loch Lomond to Kennacraig

The next leg of your journey takes about 2 hours, if you put your foot down. But we’re chilled and enjoying the ride, so who knows how long it will take in real life?!

We’re going to travel up the western edge of the loch, taking in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside, including the gorgeous Ben Lomond. We’ll pass close to the Butter Bridge, a charming old stone bridge which makes for perfect photos to remember your journey by. The scenery around here is mindblowing – every turn reveals something extraordinary. An iconic attraction on the way is Inveraray Castle with its stunning gardens.

<iframe title="A FERRY TO ISLAY (AND BACK!)

Kennacraig to Islay

From the ferry port at Kennacraig, it’s an enjoyable ride over the waters to Islay. Perhaps, by now, you will be keen to spend some time under a roof again. So book a few nights in Islay Cottages and enjoy our luxurious accommodation. Find out more about all our cottages and Kilchoman House here. Keep your Land Rover handy though because Islay is an island that demands to be explored. And the good news about driving holidays to Islay? You can do this adventure all over again, just in reverse, and see all the bits you missed on the way over!

Take an unforgettable trip to Islay and enjoy the stunning coastlines and countryside of our beautiful island with a road trip. Whatever time of year you visit, you will be able to enjoy beautiful scenery, explore hidden corners and spot wildlife in their natural habitat. Enjoying Islay from the road is a great way to make sure you don’t miss any of our beautiful beaches or fascinating distilleries. And when you book a stay at Islay Cottages, you can have comfortable luxury accommodation to return to after your day out. Here are our top tips on making the most of your Scotland road trip on Islay.

Getting here with a car

If you are planning a road trip around Scotland, it’s straightforward to get your car over to Islay. Direct ferries leave the port at Kennacraig on the west of Scotland regularly, although you should book your trip in advance. You need to buy a ticket for all passengers, as well as one for your vehicle.

You can choose whether you want to arrive at Port Ellen or Port Askaig. Whichever port you decide to visit, the total journey time on the ferry is around 2 hours. Remember to book your place on the ferry going back, too!

Islay has plenty of options for petrol and diesel. If you are bringing an electric car, great! We also now have many options for electric charging on the island too.

Hiring a car

There are many options to hire a car before you arrive on Islay, and even once you get here. For example, Nomadic Scotland offer the chance to drive the roads with a 4×4, either automatic or manual. This can be a fun experience, and might even be useful if you are planning on driving along some of our smaller tracks. This is a great solution for those looking to do a tour of Scotland and some island hopping to Islay and Jura too.

If you would prefer to hire your car here on Islay, then consider Islay Car Hire. This is a great way to get a car here but not need to worry about ferry crossing with one. Do make sure you book your car in advance, especially during the busiest tourist seasons.

Things to see on your Islay road trip

Where to start? There’s so much beauty on Islay that taking a road trip is the best idea to catch as much of it as you would like to. Try a distillery tour (whilst remembering to have a designated driver) and enjoy a taste of our island’s whisky. If you’re here to see some Scottish deer, then head out into our forested areas and grassland for your best chance.

Islay is also rich in castles and history. Take a tour through hundreds of years of human civilisation by visiting places like Dunyvaig Castle and Finlaggan Castle. The beauty of doing this with your own car is that you can take your time and take in as much history as you want before moving on.

A road tour of Islay

However you spend your time here on Islay, it makes for the perfect addition to your Scotland road trip. Bring your own car, hire one on the mainland or pick one up on the island – the choice is yours! And remember to spend some time here with us on Islay Cottages. This year, Feis Isle starts on Friday 23rd May 2025 and its last day is Saturday 31st May. Please see our booking calendar to check availability and confirm your Fèis Ìle accommodation with us.

This annual festival is an absolute highlight of our calendar. Over a few days days there are events, tastings, dances and much more. It runs from the From the 23rd May until the 31st May there are loads of things to do all over the island. Join us in our shared passion for the water of life.

Festival origins

Fèis Ìle can trace its roots back to 1984 when it began as a small gathering to celebrate Islay’s rich whisky heritage. Over the years it grew and developed, evolving into a week-long extravaganza, attracting thousands of visitors to our little island.

Distilleries have taken it upon themselves to embrace the festival and really showcase their finest drams. From Lagavulin to Laphroaig, enthusiasts can sample exclusive releases and limited editions from world-renowned distilleries. It’s a great opportunity to buy a bottle to take back home as a present. It’s also a good time to take one back to your Islay Cottage for a cosy night in!

There are plenty of diverse activities available at Fèis Ìle to keep everyone engaged. Whether you are a seasoned whisky connoisseur or a newcomer to the drink (and island) you will be made most welcome. Head on to enjoy a distillery tour and see how this magical drink is made, from mashing and fermentation to distillation and maturation. Take part in masterclasses led by experts to really get to grips with all the intricacies involved in creating these whiskies, and what makes one different from one another.

There are also musical performances, wildlife tours, art exhibitions and of course ceilidh dances to ensure all visitors are immersed in Islay’s rich heritage beyond whisky.

Do you need tickets?

It’s absolutely fine to simply come to Islay and enjoy the festival – no special tickets are required to be here. However, Fèis Ìle tickets are required for official events and these can be bought in advance. Tickets are usually released from February onwards. For special distillery events, you can expect these tickets to be released in April.

Keep your eye on the ticketing page, or follow the festival on Facebook. Tickets for events can go pretty quickly, so make sure you get yours booked sooner rather than later.

Hogmanay is what we call New Year’s Eve in Scotland. It’s a time of much celebration as we wave goodbye to the old year and welcome in the new with songs, fireworks and perhaps the odd dram of whisky. Here on Islay, we have many customs and celebrations and welcome visitors to join us as the clock strikes 12. If you are looking to book some holiday accommodation on Islay over the new year, then Islay Cottages makes for a perfect place to relax, party and enjoy this beautiful island.

Local Hogmanay celebrations on Islay

Hogmanay is a time when residents can get together and wish each other all the best for the new year. Although our celebrations are small, they are welcoming and great fun. People usually meet by the pier in Bowmore, and here we’ll often see some fireworks. On a clear night with the stars shining above us, this is a remarkable experience and one visitors should seek out.

There is also usually a ceilidh underway nearby – some dancing might even spontaneously appear on the street!

In Scotland, residents welcome ‘first footers’. This is an ancient tradition where the first person to enter your home in the new year brings good luck and can bring gifts such as shortbread or whisky. Perhaps if you make some friends on the night, you might be lucky enough to be someone’s first footer!

You may also see some bonfires dotted around the island. This is a tradition on Islay and people tend to gather around them, enjoying the heat and each other’s company. A verse of Auld Lang Syne might even be sung, so make sure you know the words!

A traditional Scottish Christmas

Christmas is fast approaching, a time for families and friends to unite, celebrate and reflect. We don’t think there’s anywhere better to experience a traditional Scottish Christmas than right here on our beautiful island. There’s a great sense of community and togetherness here as we enter the festive period. And although the weather is getting chilly now, when we all get together to celebrate, Christmastime is truly warm and cosy.

Believe it or not, Christmas is a relatively new celebration for the Scots. It was banned for many years, and it only became an official public holiday in 1958. Before then, Hogmanay (New Year) was our main winter festival, and it’s still hugely popular today. However, we do now welcome Christmas with open arms. And in true Scots style, a good drink is a must to celebrate Christmas with friends and family!

Things to do on Islay this Christmas

There’s always plenty happening on Islay over the festive period. If you’re staying with us this December, look out for local carol services, live music and festive fairs. Not forgetting some fabulous Hogmanay celebrations on New Year’s Eve.

Festive events on the Isle of Islay 2024

Take a look at these fabulous festive events to get you in the Christmas spirit!

Islay distilleries festive shopping

Many of the local distilleries on Islay open for shopping events in the run-up to Christmas, with festive treats and special offers. Check with your favourite distillery to see if they are holding any special events or markets. Please also check directly with the distilleries for their winter opening times over the festive season. The Christmas break can be a busy time for distilleries, so if you are keen to go on a tour of your favourite, it’s best to book in advance. Find out more here.

Other Christmas fairs and events

In addition to the whisky distilleries, Smaller stores and community groups hold Christmas events. These can help promote local businesses or raise money for charity. For example, the Islay High School Christmas fayre is on the 14th December, 10 am – 2 pm. Keep an eye on local listings during your stay to find out more.

Islay has many things to offer visitors. Beautiful sea views, stunning beaches, gorgeous cottages and even delicious pizza restaurants! But often the first thing that comes to people’s minds when they hear the name, is whisky. The island has been distilling this delicious drink since at least the 1700s, and a leader in the field today is the Ardbeg Distillery in the south of the island. Having recently sold a one-of-a-kind 1975 cask for a remarkable £16 million, it’s worth asking – what’s all the fuss about with Ardbeg?

The history of an award-winning distillery

Ardbeg Distillery can trace its roots back to 1815 when John Macdougall started brewing and selling his whisky. After buyouts, closures and re-openings, fast forward to 1998 and Ardbeg is voted Distillery of the Year. This is the first of many awards. One of the biggest awards came when Ardbeg Ten Years Old won World Whisky of the Year in Jim Murray’s 2008 Whisky Bible. Today, whisky from the Ardbeg distillery is drunk all over the world. Some claim it to be the best there is!

Visiting the distillery

Visitors staying at Islay Cottages often want to take an insider glimpse into how whisky is made at Ardbeg Distillery. There are tours aplenty for you to choose from. For a basic yet insightful tour – perfect for those just learning about whisky – then try the Quintessential Ardbeg Tour. Learn all about milling, mashing, fermentation, distillation and maturation.

If you are looking for something a bit more in-depth focussed on the whisky rather than the making of it, then consider the Stillhouse and Warehouse 3 Tasting tour. Here you’ll be able to taste whiskies straight form the cask. You’ll also have an expert on hand to help you detect all the subtle flavours.

For the ultimate experience, consider an evening spent in Ardbeg an evening well spent! For a detailed tour and rare tasting along with a small group of friends and family, An Evening Behind Closed Doors is for you.

Take a look at this distillery’s range of tours, which change depending on the season. And if you get hungry, you can also choose from a selection of food and (non-alcoholic) drink at the distillery too.

Delicious drams

Our cottages make the perfect place to sit and have a dram of Ardbeg whisky. Whether cosied in by a fire in our cottages, or outside enjoying the views form the garden at Kilchoman House, a fine sip of whisky can make everything just right. So what should you choose?

The Ardbeg Ten Year Old is a drink enjoyed everywhere by people who love a peaty flavour. It has a magnificent depth of flavour, and is something to enjoy with others. This popular whisky takes on a new life when a drop of water is added too. The perfect end to any day.

For something a bit more adventurous, try the Ardbeg Wee Beastie. Described as the rawest, smokiest Ardbeg ever, this is a drink to fine tune your senses.

Take a look at the wide range of Ardbeg whiskies available here.

Stay with us on Islay

So enjoy the finest whisky in luxurious accommodation on Islay. Our cottages make for the perfect setting for a relaxing stay on the island, and with a glass of whisky in hand, it couldn’t be more Scottish. Take a look at our special offers and start planning your Scottish break on Islay with a visit to the Ardbeg distillery.

Scottish Wildlife

Islay is home to some truly magnificent natural beauty and Scottish wildlife. The island is a hot spot for wildlife and birdwatchers throughout the world and renowned for its offering of diverse and rare wild inhabitants. Planning a trip to Islay? Keep reading to find out more about wildlife spotting on Islay.

Grey Seals

Islay is the perfect place to observe grey seals in their natural habitat. With a colony native to the island, the seals have become fairly accustomed to a human presence and as such are happy to come within close proximity. Be warned – grey seals have a nasty bite and will not stop at anything to protect their young. It’s always important to remember never to approach a seal pup, even if it’s on its own as if your scent transfers to them. When the mother seal returns, she is likely to reject her pup. If you’re worried that a seal pup has been abandoned, stay downwind, to prevent your scent scaring away the mother and keep an eye on the baby. If you’re confident no mother is returning, then call the Scottish SPCA on 0300 0999 999.

The best places to spot grey seals on the island are Port Wemyss and Portnahaven. You may also see them around the bays between Lagavulin and Artalla. Seals can also be found at Loch Gruinart Nature Reserve.

Keep an eye out for seals in the water around Islay.

Whales

When you’re on the Isle of Islay, part of the excitement of exploring Scottish wildlife is the chance to spot whales swimming in the nearby waters. From The Oa Nature Reserve, you can catch a glimpse of humpback whales, killer whales and minke whales. These massive creatures travel huge distances, swimming north or south, or crossing the wide Atlantic and often pass by our Scottish shores during their migrations.

The Oa is right at the end of the Hebrides, facing Northern Ireland and the Atlantic Ocean.

Dolphins

If you’re lucky while checking out the Scottish wildlife around Islay, you might spot some dolphins playing in the waves. These amazing creatures are a joy to watch as they leap and swim. Keep your eyes peeled when you’re near the coast and you might just catch a glimpse of them having a blast in their natural habitat. Seeing dolphins off Islay’s shores is a special moment that you won’t forget!

Dolphins are frequently seen around Port Ellen, also in Kilnaughton Bay.

Porpoises

Port Askaig, on Islay’s coast, gives a great view of the Sound of Islay This is a narrow strip of water between the neighbouring islands. The tides here are strong, making it a busy spot where Scottish wildlife thrives. Among the creatures you might spot are Harbour Porpoises. These small but clever animals are expert hunters, hardly ever missing their prey. They’re less than 2 meters long, so they can be tricky to spot, but watch for their curved backs and triangle-shaped fins as they swim through the Sound of Islay.

You’ll find Porpoises swimming through the Sound of Islay water.

Back on land…

Bird Watching

On the Scottish island of Islay, there are around 100 different types of birds that inhabit here from Golden Eagles soaring overhead to Puffins nesting along the coastline. Bird watching is the perfect pastime when visiting Islay. Loch Gruinart Reserve is a great place to take your binoculars and see a wide range of wild birds on the moorlands. Whether you’re a pro at spotting birds or just starting out, Islay’s beaches, moors and lakes are perfect for exploring Scottish wildlife.

Golden Eagles soar above the Oa year-round, making it a prime spot for visitors to catch sight of these birds of prey.

European Otters

If you’re seeking ot-ta wildlife, then Islay has a treat in store for you! A bad pun aside, Islay is a prime place to spot a European otter or two! The otters on the island are notoriously tricky to spot. If you wait a while, you are likely to be rewarded for your patience. You might spot them on the north of Bunnahabain, or on the Caol Ila beach.

Otters live near streams in almost any location on the island.

Deer

Of course, no trip to the Scottish Highlands and Islands would be complete without spotting a stag! You may spot these majestic creatures throughout the island, but they can be very shy! The island is home to three species of deer – Fallow, Roe and Red deer. These species can be found all over the island and are a great challenge for those looking to add to their photography bucket list.

Roe Deer on a sunny day in Islay.

Brown Hare

The beautiful species of brown hare are all over the island. Easily spooked like the deer on Islay, the best time to sneak a peek at a brown hare is during dusk in the vicinity of Loch Gorm. Take things slow on the road as these adorable mammals may jump out onto the road! If you’re lucky, you may even be privileged to watch the hares play together in groups.

Watch out for hares across the island.

Stoats

Stoats are pretty common on Islay and they are interesting creatures. Some people think Islay stoats are a bit different from others and a species of their own, but not everyone agrees. Even though we don’t get much snow here, stoats on the Isle of Islay turn white in the winter. Keep an eye out for stoats when you’re exploring Islay’s countryside!

Stoats are very secretive and hard to spot.

Frogs and Toads

Frogs and toads are pretty common on Islay. You can find the Common Toad and the Common Frog all over the place. You might hear their croaking sounds during the breeding season. These amphibians are a sign that Islay’s ecosystem is healthy. So, when you’re out exploring the island, keep an eye out for these little guys hopping around in ponds and marshes.

Spot toads and frogs in the marshes around Islay.

Enjoy a spring break on Islay, Scotland

As winter draws to an end, we are very much looking forward to spring. This is one of our favourite times of year. Nature is coming back to life, the weather is beginning to warm up, and there is a happy spring feeling in the air! Today, we’re sharing some of the reasons we love spring on Islay so much. So if you’re planning a spring break in Scotland, make sure you come and visit us here on Islay.

Nature springs to life

In spring, nature wakes up and creates a stunning spectacle. Making the wild Islay landscapes all the better to explore. Plants and trees become green and lush again, and flowers burst into full bloom. Look out for daffodils, bluebells and primroses – all sure signs that spring has sprung. On the coast, you might see otters, seals and wading birds such as lapwings and plovers. And at this time of year, we’d recommend a visit to Loch Gruinart RSPB Nature Reserve. This is a wonderful wildlife site with a range of habitats, such as mudflats, saltmarsh, grassland, moorland, bogland and woodland, where you can see a wide variety of birds and other animals. This is the time when many animals begin their mating displays, which can be fascinating to watch. You may encounter unusual bird calls and dances, hear roe deer making barking alarm calls, or even spot brown hares boxing. Look for peregrine, hen harriers, corncrakes, white-tailed eagles and golden eagles too.

Female brown hares may be seen fighting off males during the spring mating season.

Weather warms up

The weather warms up in spring, with average temperatures ranging from 4-9 °C in March, up to 8-14°C in May. Chance of rain is about 38%. Which means, warmer, drier days are on the way. So you can spend more time outdoors, taking in the sights of Islay. Some of our favourite outdoor places to visit in spring include the beautiful Machir Bay or a walk to Dunyvaig Castle. But don’t worry if it does rain, it’s the perfect excuse to retreat indoors to one of the whisky distilleries Islay is most famous for, such as Bowmore, Kilchoman or Caol Ila.

Machir Bay is a beautiful place to visit in spring. Walk the length of the bay and take in the views!

Days get longer

We get more hours of daylight as spring arrives on Islay, stretching from 10 hours at the start of March to 17 hours at the end of May. And don’t forget that the clocks go forward by one hour on Sunday 27th March this year, extending daylight into the evenings. So you can really make the most of your days here. Why not use the time to take a longer walk? There are many Islay walks to choose from of differing levels and distances. And after a busy day, enjoy a delicious meal at our Peatzeria restaurant in Bowmore. Where you can take advantage of those last few hours of daylight with outdoor seating overlooking the magnificent Lochindaal, or head indoors for cosy, welcoming dining.

The outdoor dining area at Peatzeria overlooks Lochindaal.

Spring activities and attractions

And as we move out of winter, more activities and attractions open up on the island. For example, Islay Sea Adventures boat tours, which start up in April. Or the Museum of Islay Life, which re-opens around Easter. And if you’re looking for wildlife walks, fishing trips, bird watching, field sports and other guided trips, Islay Outdoors can tailor your experience based on the time of year and your interests.

The Museum of Islay Life in Port Charlotte re-opens around Easter, and tells the story of our island from prehistoric to modern times.

Beautiful Islay villages and towns

Are you planning a trip to Islay? If so, then make sure you don’t miss out on some of the beautiful Islay villages and towns here on the Island. There are little hamlets, villages and towns dotted all over Islay, and they are all within easy reach of each other by car. We’ve put together some of our favourite places to visit – and what to do when you get there!

Port Charlotte

This is regarded by many as “the most beautiful village” on the island. It was founded by the Member of Parliament and Laird of Islay, Walter Frederick Campbell in 1828. This charming little place was named after Campbell’s mother, Lady Charlotte Campbell Bury. A slightly larger village on the island, it was built to house the workers of the Lochindaal Distillery, which opened in 1829. You may have heard this distillery referred to as the Port Charlotte Distillery, or Rhinns Distillery. And sadly, this was one distillery not to last… it closed in 1929, just over 100 years from its opening. But its buildings still remain and some are now in use by a Youth Hostel and the Islay Natural History Trust.

Port Charlotte is where you will find the Museum of Islay Life, documenting life on the island over the past 12,000 years. Exhibits include reconstructions from archaeological excavations of prehistoric sites on the island. It’s a fascinating look at how people used to live here on Islay.

Bruichladdich

Just north of Port Charlotte is the village of Bruichladdich, with a distillery at its heart. Built in 1881, by brothers Robert William and John Gourlay Harvey, Bruichladdich was specifically designed to produce the purest unpeated spirit possible. But the distillery has been opened and closed variously throughout the years. In more recent years it has been taken over by the drinks giant Remy Cointreau, and today it is a successful business. It is a place you can visit on your trip to taste and buy some delicious drinks. Tours are available when possible, but it is wise to get in touch beforehand to check they are running.

And of course, Bruichladdich Distillery bought the rest of the old Lochindaal Distillery buildings and have created a new whisky distillery and gin distillery. As such they have become a very popular whisky brand from Isaly… and gin! The Botanist is now one of Scotland’s most popular gins. Here you can enjoy super tours, cocktail making and tasting sessions, and a wonderful shop.

Bruichladdich Distillery

Port Charlotte

Portnahaven Village

These are two separate villages close together that share many things – including a church! Each village has its own entrance (you can choose which side to enter from yourself!).

Portnahaven has a small sheltered harbour which is often home to grey seals basking in the island sun. Along the seaside, you’ll enjoy whitewashed houses looking out over the water. It was built during the 19th century, as a fishing and crofting villager and offers a slice of history for explorers. So, step back in time and walk amongst the quaint buildings whilst listening to the waves lapping on the rocks. Or, take to the water’s edge, and stunning enjoy views of the opposite bay of Orsay Island. And here you will also find the famous Rhinns of Islay lighthouse, which was built in 1825. Still today the lantern can be seen some 40 kilometres away at sea. This is a great spot for a walk and a picnic on the rocks, whilst spotting for seals.

Port Wemyss

And whilst you are down this way, pop along next door to the lovely Port Wemys, built in 1832. Again, this village was built to encourage fishing and take people away from farming the lands. And as a fishing village, the catch would be cured and traded in Ireland. As such, the village has strong ties with the Irish and enjoys a Celtic shop.

As well as plenty of history, in Port Wemyss you will find a coastal path that is great to stroll along; it’s not a long path, but over its course, you might be lucky enough to spot dolphins out at sea. With these villages being so close, in past times, they shared one church, but with separate doors for the people of each village to enter.

Kilchoman

Home of Islay Cottages, Kilchoman is an area of Islay that is one of the most ancient on the islands. Although the current church was built in 1827, an older medieval church existed on the site before then. Nearby is our wonderful Machir Bay which has both a rocky area and sandy beach. It’s also the site of many shipwrecks!

Nearby, Kilchoman Distillery produces its delicious single malt whisky. It’s a great trip out, especially if you are staying with us at Kilchoman House. Set in 37 acres and over 200 years old, it’s a great place to kick back with a dram and enjoy the serenity island life can offer.

Kilchoman Church

Ardnave

Ardnave Point is a wonderful area to visit if you enjoy history. It is here in the sandy grasslands of the Ardnave peninsula that evidence of intermittent human activity spanning some seven thousand years from Mesolithic times to the Early Historic period has been found. Some of the objects found here, including a hearth, are on display in Islay Museum.

There is some wonderful walking along this part of Islay’s coast, with plenty of wildlife to be spotted. Keep your eye out for mysterious-looking pools, which were once used to keep lobsters fresh for sale!

Bowmore

The capital of Islay is Bowmore, and it is very likely that you will visit this town at some point during your stay. There are around 1,000 people who stay here, and so the town has all the facilities and amenities that you could need.

One particularly pleasant thing to do here is to visit the Bowmore Round Church. They say it is round so there are no corners for the devil to hide in! It’s beautifully decorated and is certainly worth a visit. And here you will also find Bowmore distillery and a lovely harbour to explore. Bowmore is one of the main villages on the island of Islay, and as such, here you will find shops, a petrol station, eco-car chargers, and amenities.

And don’t forget to also pay a visit to Peatzeria, our very own restaurant and home to delicious Italian food! Peatzeria is one of the most popular restaurants on Islay, and as such is rated the best Islay restaurant on TripAdvisor.

Wherever you visit on Islay, from small hamlets to larger towns, you are sure to enjoy the peace and tranquillity our beautiful island can offer. Islay villages offer the chance to get away from it all and dream of what life could be like living on an island like Islay. Book a stay with us today.

Islay Prehistory

The history of Islay goes back to when hunter-gatherers settled here many thousands of years ago. With the discovery of Mesolithic and Ice Age artefacts in the area, researchers have come to the conclusion that Islay was occupied from around 10,000 BC.

You can see many of these ancient tools and other items at the Islay Museum in Port Charlotte. And you can visit many prehistoric sites on the island, including ceremonial standing stones, burial cairns and forts.

Medieval Islay

During medieval times, ordinary people on the island were farmers, who bred livestock and produced oats and barley in the rich and fertile land.

From the 6th century, Islay was ruled by a Gaelic overkingdom named Dál Riata. Then in the 9th century, Norse Vikings took control. By the 12th century, Scotland started to reclaim its islands. Helped by a warrior named Somerled, who seized them in 1156 and founded a dynasty that became the ‘Lords of the Isles’. Islay was under full Scottish rule by 1493.

Islay changed dramatically throughout the medieval period, as different cultures and influences shaped its landscape. There are several Medieval ruins that remain on the island, including Kilchoman Church and Finlaggan, the powerbase of the Lords of the Isles.

British Era and World Wars

Islay was under Scottish rule until 1707, when the Scottish and English thrones merged to create the Kingdom of Great Britain. The Scottish and the British fought many battles over the leadership of Scotland. Then later in the 20th century, both countries joined forces to defeat their shared enemies in World Wars One and Two.

What will you get up to when staying in our family-friendly accommodation on Islay? There are plenty of things to do with kids on our beautiful Scottish island. Here are some of our favourites.

Play on the Beach

Well, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to a natural playground for all generations! Islay boasts more than 20 beautiful beaches around its coastline. Often you can have these beaches all to yourselves too. And what parents can’t resist building sand castle or letting the kids bury them in the sand? Learning can continue for all when you explore the ample rock pools that crawl with sea life!
